How to clean and care for your seat covers
A few minutes of care every week keeps your covers looking new for years. Here is a simple routine, plus what to do when something gets spilled.
Champagne Luxe
Weekly routine
- Vacuum the seats with a soft brush attachment, paying attention to seams, quilting and perforations where dust collects.
- Wipe the surface with a soft microfibre cloth dampened with lukewarm water.
- Dry with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
Dealing with spills and marks
- Act quickly. Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth. Do not rub, which spreads the mark.
- Use mild soap. For anything sticky, mix a few drops of mild, pH-neutral soap in lukewarm water, wring the cloth out well and wipe gently.
- Rinse and dry. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water, then dry.
- Light colours. Dye from new jeans can transfer onto light covers. Wipe it off early before it settles in.
Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
What to avoid
- Bleach, solvents, alcohol-based or ammonia-based cleaners.
- Abrasive sponges, stiff brushes and magic erasers.
- Soaking the covers, pressure washers or steam cleaners.
- Removing the covers to machine wash or tumble dry them.
Perforated and quilted areas
Perforations and diamond quilting look great but hold more dust. Vacuum them first, then use a barely damp cloth so water does not soak through. If you have ventilated seats, see seat covers for heated and ventilated seats.
Protecting your covers long term
- Use a windshield sunshade in hot, sunny weather to reduce heat and UV exposure.
- Empty pockets of keys and tools before sitting down to avoid scratches.
- For pets or heavy work use, add a removable protector on top of the base cushion only, never over the airbag side of the backrest.
